The Proteas take on New Zealand in the first of the three t20s the 2 sides will play in new Zealand. New Zealand as a venue presents a very different challenge to what AB De Villiers and co have faced throughout the summer against Australia and Sri Lanka. In Australia they found a resilient opponent and Sri Lanka was a country in turmoil and both were played on home turf, that advantage cannot be ignored.
New Zealand conditions present an odd mix of sub continent conditions, in the fact that most pitches are slow, and English conditions, in the fact that it swings. proteas will have to have their wits about them in this clash. The t20s and the one dayers seem like the carnival part of the tour, the real focus for me would be on the tests. With the possibility of usurping England's top spot in the ICC test rankings and earning themselves a sizeable packet , makes this contest even more interesting than it normally is. Ofcourse there is the condition that South Africa whitewash New Zealand.
Before ofcourse we do go into the tests we have the one dayers. And which Pure Protean can forget that fateful day in Bangladesh when their team, along with all their hopes and dreams of finally bringing home some ICC silverware, were eliminated. To have succumb so in such a meek manner to the NZ bowling line was not expected. A certain image of Allan Donald sitting at the boundary edge tutoring the Tim Southee comes to mind. Well now the Proteas start afresh. New captain, new management, young team, the contest should be an exciting one.
As far as South Africa's test record in New Zealand goes apart from the 2003/04 series which theydrew they have won the other tests.
The ODIs present more or less a similar picture as do the tests. Again the series of 2003/04 stands out wherein NZ thumped Saf 5-1. Apart from that South Africa has won the other bilateral series.
Out of the 2 t20s played either side has won one a piece against each other.
New Zealand are coming off thumping wins against a resilient Zimbabwe side and South Africa are under a new captain. The series beckons some mouth watering clashes.
GO PROTEAS !!!
